Local Renewables Conference 2014

Regional development through energy transition – practical guidance on efficiently utilising renewable energy resources

Freiburg im Breisgau and Lörrach, Germany
Organised by ICLEI Europe, the City of Freiburg and the City of Lörrach, the 6th Local Renewables conference will provide with practical guidance on how to shape solar cities and regions, and optimise local renewable energy potentials. The conference will explore how local governments can embrace clean energy and tackle financial, planning and regulatory challenges to shape their solar city by optimising collaboration with local stakeholders (business, civil society and academia), evaluating technological innovations, and identifying various sources of financing.

The target group of the conference includes decision-makers from various levels of government, city strategy developers, urban and regional planners, energy service providers and experts, senior representatives of the business sector and researchers.

Meeting at Keerbergen Municipality

Introduction of the Covenant of Mayors and Mayors in Action

The municipalities of the region of Leuven can appeal to the services of Interleuven for writing their sustainable energy action plan (SEAP). Up to now Interleuven will support 9 municipalities concerning the development and the performance of the SEAP.

This meeting is held in each municipality separately with the following agenda:
- Short introduction of the Covenant of Mayors
- How to organise their internal steering committee for developing the SEAP: aim, composition, function, tasks,…
- Mayors in Action project
- Planning of Interleuven

Only the local authorities (mayor, aldermen, government officials) were invited to this meeting. The participation of citizens and other organisations will be considered in the next meetings.

Local policies, science and advocacy for cycling

This workshop will bring together cities, cycling advocates and researchers for the promotion of the most efficient human renewable energy-based transport mode: cycling.

The focus of the event will be on how to use scientific facts & figures on cycling to influence local and regional political decision making and international conferences.
